KAPIT (Jan 31): The bridge project in Nanga Belawai near here signifies the state government’s commitment to strengthening rural connectivity and regional socio-economic development in the rural areas – in this case, the Song and Kapit districts.

The infrastructure development is intended to facilitate better mobility of residents through connectivity between the west bank of Rajang River and the opposite side of this town that leads to Song, Kanowit and also Sibu.

Initiated in May last year, this project involves the construction of a 550m bridge linking Nanga Belawai and Nanga Yong, as well as a 2.8km access road linking Nanga Belawai and the main Urda Road.

The works are set for completion in 2030, barring unforeseen circumstances.

This was highlighted during a meeting on the project, involving the relevant agencies, which took place at the Kapit Resident’s Office on Thursday.

Kapit Resident Elvis Didit chaired the session.

Deputy Minister in Sarawak Premier’s Department (Native Laws and Customs) Datuk Jefferson Jamit, together with assemblymen Nicholas Kudi Jantai (Baleh) and Lidam Assan (Katibas), were also present at the meeting.

Other attendees were a political secretary to the Premier of Sarawak, Watson Awan Jalai; political secretary to the federal Works Minister, Ambrose Abong Bugek; Kapit District officer Thomas Kendawang; Kapit District Council chairman Andy Lawrence; acting Upper Rajang Development Agency (Urda) regional manager Dr Nelson Berandah Seli; and divisional engineer Jawa Gara.
