SIBU (Oct 5): The new Sungai Sadit ferry point is now ready for the public, said Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh.
Wong, who is also the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) senior vice president, together with a delegation from the PDP Paradom service centre, made a site visit to the new ferry point here today.
According to Wong, the new facility was completed late last month and would replace the nearby original ferry point that was in dire straits.
“The piece of land where the original ferry point was located had been bought by a shipyard owner.
“A decision was made initially to stop the ferry service as it would be costly to relocate and reconstruct a new ferry point,” he said.
In considering the people’s reliance on the ferry service and based on the number of vehicles utilising the facility daily, he said the PDP Paradom team, led by Ting Hoong Hua and himself, has decided to come in and revive the ferry service that has been operating for the past 34 years.
The ferry service, he said, has all this while providing ease of travel and accessibility for the people travelling from Kuching, Bintangor, and Sarikei to divert the heavy traffic on the Lanang Bridge and to reach Sibu town.
The project was made possible through the Minor Rural Project (MRP) and Rural Transformation Project (RTP) allocations by the state government and with additional funds from Wong and the PDP Paradom community service centre.
