KUCHING (Dec 26): The next Sarawak state election is likely to be held after the Gawai Dayak celebration next year, possibly as early as July or August, rather than waiting until early 2027, according to political observer Dato Peter Minos.
In a statement, Minos said his observations and feedback indicated that a post-Gawai timeline would be more favourable, as it would follow a festive and positive public mood while coinciding with generally more conducive weather conditions.
He said holding the election during this period would also capitalise on the favourable public sentiment generated by numerous development initiatives and achievements under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and the Sarawak government.
“These include the coastal highway and bridges, the takeover of Bintulu Port, the establishment of AirBorneo, the growth of new green industries, the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system, free tertiary education, the Development Bank of Sarawak (DBOS), Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) and many others,” he said.
Minos added that major projects such as the new international airport and the proposed high-impact deep-sea port at Tanjung Embang would further boost public confidence, as they are expected to create jobs, income and business opportunities, while positioning Sarawak to be admired and respected.
According to him, elections are best held when conditions are stable and positive, and when voters feel confident about both the present and the future.
He said people across Sarawak, from the young to the old and from rural to urban areas, currently perceive the state government and the Premier as highly active, capable and efficient, noting that public perception plays a significant role in electoral outcomes.
Minos also described Abang Johari as being widely seen as a strong defender of Sarawak’s rights and interests, particularly in his firm stance on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and the Federal Constitution.
He cited the successful assertion of Sarawak’s rights in matters such as the sales tax on oil and gas products as an example of this leadership, saying such actions had resonated positively with Sarawakians.
“In terms of development projects and the fight for Sarawak’s rights, the Premier has done it right. Very right,” he said, adding that the current situation has created what he described as the best possible mood for seeking a fresh mandate.
Minos questioned the need to wait until 2027 to hold the state election unless there is a compelling reason to do so, suggesting that next year may present a more opportune window.
The last state election, the 12th Sarawak state election, was held on Dec 18, 2021.
