MUKAH: The ‘Sejambak Kasih’ programme, organised by the Sarawak Social Welfare Department (JKM), includes all ethnic communities embracing their own festivals.

Women, Early Childhood and Community Well-being Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah emphasised the importance of ensuring that no community is left out in commemorating their festivals.

“We will ensure that all eligible individuals in the ‘Sejambak Kasih’ programme receive and enjoy the assistance provided.

“This will enhance the public’s confidence in the government, fostering unity among diverse communities,” she said.

Fatimah said this when officiating at the ‘Sejambak Kasih’ Chinese New Year Celebration 2024 at the Foochow Association Hall here recently.

She noted that this initiative is a step towards ensuring the people of Sarawak remain united without feeling marginalised, emphasising their commitment to principles of justice.

In addition to the ‘Sejambak Kasih’ Chinese New Year, similar celebrations will continue for other festivals such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Christmas, and Gawai Dayak.

Fatimah, who serves as the Dalat assemblywoman, urged early exposure to celebrations, advocating for decorations in nurseries or kindergartens to make children feel excited about upcoming festivities.

“When there are upcoming celebrations, relevant parties should decorate nurseries or kindergartens so that children are more excited to celebrate. They need to be exposed to the celebrations in Sarawak,” she asserted.

She added that this is one way to educate children about living in a diverse society.

During the event, Fatimah presented contributions in the form of hampers and cash to 38 recipients present.

Meanwhile, the contributions also benefited a total of 184 recipients in the Mukah division.
