MIRI (Feb 12): Not a single complaint will be swept under the carpet, assured deputy minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya.
He reiterated that all public complaints, including those involving federal government agencies, would be evaluated, thoroughly studied and acted upon accordingly.
“If there are complaints concerning federal government agencies, we will work closely with the chief secretary to the government and the federal secretary of Sarawak,” he said during the Ombudsman townhall session for the northern zone, held with state civil servants and members of the community at a hotel here.
“Through the Sarawak Ombudsman Ordinance, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has taken a very bold step in creating a channel and space for the people to report matters to the government,” he added.
He described the Ombudsman as the “ears of the people”, listening to grievances and complaints from the public.
He also called on the public to submit reports that are genuine and factual, and to cooperate with the government in resolving issues raised.
In his address, Juanda elaborated on the concept of “maladministration” in public governance, highlighting acts that violate rules and ethics in serving the community.
These include actions that cause losses to the public, abuse of power, negligence, delays in decision-making, discrimination and bribery.
The townhall served as a platform for the Ombudsman to engage directly with the people and hear first-hand the experiences, challenges and grievances faced when dealing with government agencies.
About 300 participants attended the event, including state civil servants and community leaders, as well as representatives from federal government agencies, local authorities, state-owned enterprises, and statutory bodies.
Also present were deputy chief Ombudsman of Sarawak Alexander Unya Ambon and Miri Resident Galong Luang.
