KUCHING, May 6: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia) has confirmed that no seismic activity was detected in the Samarahan area last Sunday (May 3) at the reported times of around 9.30am and 3.30pm.

The clarification comes after posts and videos were widely shared on social media, claiming that residents in Samarahan experienced brief ground tremors lasting a few seconds.

In a statement today, MET Malaysia director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said continuous monitoring and cross-checks with earthquake data from external agencies showed no evidence of any seismic events occurring in the area during the stated period.

“Based on monitoring conducted, MET Malaysia did not detect any seismic activity in Samarahan on May 3, 2026 at the reported times,” he added.

The National Weather and Earthquake Operations Centre (POCGN), located at MET Malaysia headquarters in Petaling Jaya, operates 24 hours a day to monitor earthquake activity nationwide and regionally.

Mohd Hisham emphasised that any verified earthquake occurrences would be promptly disseminated through official communication channels once detected.

In light of the incident, MET Malaysia encouraged members of the public to obtain the latest updates on earthquakes and tsunami warnings via MET Malaysia’s official website at www.met.gov.my, its verified social media platforms, or the hotline at 1-300-22-1638. — DayakDaily
