KUCHING, March 29: No reports of water supply disruptions have been received across Sarawak so far despite the ongoing hot weather.
Sarawak Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said the situation remains under control, with supply continuing as normal Statewide, including throughout the Hari Raya period.
“There have been no reports so far. Even during Hari Raya, Alhamdulillah, the water situation across Sarawak has remained stable,” he told reporters when met at his Hari Raya open house today.
He further said continuous monitoring is being carried out as a precaution, given forecasts of prolonged hot weather.
He added that contingency measures are already in place, with lorry tankers on standby throughout Sarawak to respond to any potential shortages.
“In the event of a drought, we have water tankers ready, including those owned by Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) and Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd, as well as leased units. If necessary, we will deploy them to affected areas,” he said.
Meanwhile, Julaihi reiterated that the Sarawak government has allocated nearly RM7 billion to implement about 360 water supply projects across the State to enhance long-term water security.
He said RM5.9 billion is for the construction and upgrading of water treatment plants and the development of the State’s water grid system, with 93 per cent of the projects already completed or underway.
An additional RM1.1 billion has been allocated for the replacement and upgrading of about 2,740 kilometres of pipelines Statewide, aimed at reducing non-revenue water over a five-year period.
“At present, urban areas enjoy full coverage, while rural areas stand at about 71 per cent, bringing the overall average to around 85 to 86 per cent,” he emphasised. – DayakDaily
