KUCHING (Oct 23): The Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) is planning to establish Environmental Lovers Clubs (PALS) in all primary and secondary schools across Sarawak by 2030, said NREB Sarawak Environmental Quality Controller, Datu Jack Liam.
He said to achieve this, NREB has set a target to establish 700 PALS clubs by 2025.
“This compares to the 484 PALS clubs that have been established so far; 900 PALS clubs by 2026; 1,100 PALS clubs by 2027; and 1,300 PALS clubs by 2028.
“Meanwhile, 1,400 PALS clubs are targeted for 2029; and 1,461 clubs by 2030,” he said.
Jack was speaking during the Sarawak-level National Environment Day (HASN) launching ceremony today at the Majma Event and Convention Centre, officiated by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said to support activities and programmes, NREB plans to allocate RM2,000 annually to each PALS club.
He indicated that to meet these targets, NREB would require RM1.4 million in 2025, followed by RM1.8 million in 2026, RM2.2 million in 2027, RM2.6 million in 2028, RM2.8 million in 2029, and RM2.922 million in 2030.
“In total, the allocation required from 2025 to 2030 (six years) is RM13.722 million, which will benefit an estimated 187,685 students.
“We sincerely hope that the Premier will consider and approve this amount,” he said.
This initiative aims to foster environmentally conscious citizens in Sarawak and promote a green, clean, and healthy state.
Jack also welcomed contributions from corporate bodies in the form of financial support and by adopting PALS clubs in schools, emphasising that such support will help ensure the clubs remain active and effectively nurture a generation committed to environmental responsibility.
