NREB urged to innovate and regulate for sustainable development

KUCHING: The Sarawak government is anticipating more accumulative and complex environmental impacts as the state continues its development.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Sarawak must address numerous and increasing challenges in environmental management and climate change issues.

“The Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), as an agency who facilitates development, must be prepared in order to effectively regulate all these developments and innovate approaches to environmental management.

“This is so that the adverse impacts on our environment could be minimised or incidence of related disasters will not happen,” he said.

He said this during NREB 30th anniversary dinner held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) last night (July 26).

Abang Johari, who is also the Energy and Environmental Sustainability Minister, stressed that robust policies and regulations are vital and remain the backbone of our environmental management efforts.

“Our legal framework has to be strengthened to adapt to emerging environmental issues, and we shall harness innovation and technology to address environmental challenges,” he said.

He added the NREB must have the necessary resources and capacity to enhance its enforcement capabilities and environmental monitoring.

“Moreover, its officers must be equipped with necessary skills in research and development to drive sustainable environment solutions.

“Engagement with all the stakeholders, including local communities and businesses to foster a collaborative approach to environmental management and protection is crucial,” he said.

Moreover, he said partnerships with international organisations, academic institutions, and the private sector to leverage expertise and resources shall be strengthened.

“It is essential to acknowledge that the costs associated with environmental management and protection are indeed substantial.

“Thus, I would urge NREB to explore ways to increase its revenue,” said Abang Johari.
