KUCHING, Apr 26: The Sarawak government is planning to widen Ong Tiang Swee road and build a multi-storey car park to improve access to the newly opened Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) Complex.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the proposed upgrades are aimed at addressing current traffic constraints in the area and accommodating increased visitor flow to the complex.

“The road named after Ong Tiang Swee was once a major route but is now considered insufficient for present-day traffic demands.

“Modern parking solutions, including automated systems, may be introduced,” he said at the official inauguration of the Unifor Complex today.

At the same event, Abang Johari also announced that Petroliam Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) will contribute RM1 million to the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) to support future programmes and activities.

“The contribution would assist Unifor in continuing its role as a coordinating body for non-Muslim houses of worship and related initiatives across the State,” he said.

Abang Johari added that the Unifor Complex serves as a central point for engagement among different religious groups, where discussions can be held to address issues and seek common solutions.

He noted that the State government has allocated about RM635 million to Unifor to date, with RM560 million channelled to hundreds of non-Muslim houses of worship and about RM120 million for the development of mission schools throughout Sarawak.

Established in 2017, Unifor functions as a dedicated unit to coordinate and distribute state assistance for non-Muslim houses of worship in a more structured and inclusive manner. The new complex serves as its main operations centre.

Abang Johari said the approach reflects the State’s continued focus on maintaining stability and supporting development through cooperation among its diverse communities. — DayakDaily
