KUCHING (Jan 18): Over 196,000 smart meters have been installed statewide by Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) since the pilot launch in 2019, said SEB group chief operating officer Dato Ir James Ung.
He said the meters improved outage detection, operational efficiency, and customer awareness of energy use.
“Sarawak Energy’s digital transformation aims to enhance the customer experience. Service excellence remains our top priority, and we continue to enhance supply reliability and create greater value for the communities we serve,” he said at the SEB Media Appreciation Night 2026 held at a hotel here on Friday.
He said towards this end, SEB was modernising their grid and operations through the Distribution Automation initiative.
Ung also announced that as of Jan 9 this year, over 380,000 active users have registered for the SEB cares mobile app, which helps customers manage bill payments, notify SEB about outages, and report on technical and customer service matters.
He said that both the Smart Meter system and SEB cares app were part of SEB’s Smart Retail approach, which also includes Integrated Customer Care Centre, multi-services payment kiosk, e-Bill, Online Supply Activation and the virtual agent CARINA.
He also noted SEB’s collaboration with the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication in empowering customers to participate directly in energy transition through the Net Energy Metering scheme, introduced in September last year.
“Supported by a rooftop solar subsidy of up to RM12,000, the scheme lowers upfront costs, delivers immediate bill savings, and allows households to contribute meaningfully to carbon reduction efforts,” he said.
He also said that direct current fast-charging stations have been commissioned in Kuching, Miri, Bintulu, Sri Aman and Sibu, which enables reliable long-distance travel across Sarawak and supports wider connectivity across Borneo to make low-carbon mobility more accessible while reinforcing sustainable growth and community development.
Also present were Syarikat Sesco Berhad chief executive officer Lau Kim Swee, SEB senior vice president of corporate services Siti Aisah Adenan, and the Kuching-based media fraternity.
