KOTA KINABALU (Jan 27): Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (Sabah Electricity) has announced a 2.5 per cent electricity rebate for eligible consumers.

Chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Yaakob Jaafar said rebate totalling RM10.4 million would benefit more than 661,000 customers in Sabah and Labuan.

He said it would be credited directly into registered consumers’ electricity bill accounts in stages from this month.

He explained that the rebate is provided under the Electricity Supply Enactment 2024 and the Licensee Supply Regulations 2024, Regulation 5(1), which requires Sabah Electricity to pay a 2.5 per cent benefit on cash deposits every January.

“This initiative reflects Sabah Electricity’s continued commitment to easing the cost-of-living burden while safeguarding consumer welfare, even as the company balances its own financial sustainability in the current economic climate,” he said in a statement.

Mohd Yaakob added that the security deposit is calculated based on two months’ electricity usage, derived from the average consumption over the previous six months and is reviewed every six months.

Any additional deposit will only be imposed if there is an increase in electricity usage compared with the existing deposit.

Conversely, if average usage is lower than the deposit held, consumers may request a refund, which can be credited back to their electricity bills in the form of a rebate.

Sabah Electricity called on consumers to practise prudent energy use and to take advantage of its official portal and mobile application, which offer tools for monitoring electricity consumption and managing household energy costs more effectively.
