Over one tonne of waste collected at Miri’s Waste to Wealth campaign

MIRI (Jan 26): The Waste to Wealth campaign held at the Miri Green Hub in Taman Yakin here recorded a major success after more than one tonne of waste materials was collected within just a few hours.

Pujut assemblyman Mayor Adam Yii said the programme, which began on Saturday, saw two strategic partners of the Miri City Council (MCC) actively involved in waste collection activities.

According to him, Eye 1 Recycle managed to collect more than 200 kilogrammes of waste, including paper, electronic, and electrical appliances, while Sekitar Hijau recorded a collection of over 800 kilogrammes of used cooking oil.

“Overall, the programme was carried out successfully and received an encouraging response,” he said after inspecting the programme together with councillor Sean Huang on Saturday.

Yii added that MCC would consider organising similar programmes in the future as part of its efforts to promote recycling practices and generate economic value from waste.

The campaign, organised by MCC, was held at two different locations from 8am to 4.30pm.

It aimed to encourage recycling practices among the community and raise awareness of the importance of sustainable waste management, while also providing cash returns to the public.

Items accepted include all types of paper, plastic bottles, metals and scrap iron, while used clothing was accepted as donations only.

Also accepted were used cooking oil, old televisions, personal computers (PCs) and other electronic items.

The public are encouraged to sort and collect recyclable items to be exchanged for cash, thereby supporting efforts to create a cleaner, greener and more sustainable environment.
