KUCHING, Feb 5: The iconic White Cat Statue at the Padungan roundabout has been dressed in new Chinese New Year attire, lighting up the area as festive celebrations begin in the city.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the annual dressing up of the city’s most famous cat reflects Sarawak’s spirit of harmony, where all communities celebrate one another’s festivals together.
“I want to thank the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, deputy mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili, councillors and management for once again dressing up our most famous cat,” he told reporters after the lighting-up ceremony here tonight.
He said the tradition highlights Kuching as a ‘City of Unity’, made more meaningful as anak Sarawak from near and far return home for the celebrations.
“We want to feel the atmosphere that Sarawak is home. We welcome everyone home and at the same time reinforce our values, where we celebrate together,” he added.
Dr Sim noted that the festive season brings families together and also serves as a reunion for all Sarawakians, and wished everyone safe journeys during the celebrations.
Meanwhile, Wee said this year’s design incorporates elements of the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system, blended with the symbolism of the Year of the Horse, representing progress, speed, success and freedom.
“The cat is designed as the driver, with the ART track in front, symbolising ‘Sarawak Maju Makmur’. It reflects that we are looking forward and moving ahead together,” he said.
He also highlighted the use of recycled tyres and sponsored lanterns, adding that growing community participation shows increasing confidence in the city council.
Dr Sim also extended his wishes for good health and happiness in the Year of the Horse to Sarawakians everywhere. — DayakDaily
