KOTA SAMARAHAN (Feb 22): A larger number of Sarawak’s assembly representatives is crucial in facilitating steady development across the state, given its vast geographical size, said Dato Idris Buang.
The State Legislative Assembly (DUN) deputy speaker stressed that Parliament should give due consideration to Sarawak’s decision to increase the number of its DUN seats and approve it.
“Parliament should carefully study and weigh this matter, as Sarawak’s population and demand for development have grown.
“Many rural areas remain (undeveloped). While we have roads, hospitals, and schools, more need to be added,” he said after officiating Kota Samarahan Municipal Council’s (MPKS) Ramadan Bazaar at Desa Ilmu here on Sunday.
Furthermore, he said Parliament should “respect Sarawak’s decision” regarding the seat increment.
“There is no reason for them to oppose the addition of seats. It requires sincerity and honesty from Parliament. I urge members of Parliament to consider everything carefully,” he reiterated, while also urging the Election Commission to conduct a thorough study on the matter.
The addition of 17 seats was tabled in the state DUN on July 7 last year and came into force on Aug 8. If approved, it would bring Sarawak’s total representation in the state DUN to 99 seats.
Commenting on the possibility of a Sarawak state election being held before the approval, Idris clarified that if the election were to take place earlier, the number of seats would remain at 82.
“However, it is up to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to determine the appropriate timing,” he said.
On another note, the Muara Tuang assemblyman said the authorities will not be adding new sites for the Ramadan Bazaar at this time, as the current area is limited to around 140 stalls.
“If we open more, there is a risk that the businesses will be too spread out. So we are limiting the number to ensure a better impact for both the vendors and visitors,” he said.
However, he added that the authorities will work on improving the presentation of the bazaar to make it more organised and comfortable for the public.
Also present were MPKS chairman Abang Ismawi Abang Ali, Asajaya district officer Rais Ahmat and other distinguished guests.
