SAMARAHAN (March 18): The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Sarawak Contingent will conduct Op Selamat 26 from March 19 to 24 in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Saifullizan Ishak said the six-day operation aims to reduce road accidents, ensure smoother traffic flow, and enhance public safety across the state.
“The operation will focus on enforcing traffic laws, educating road users on safety, and deploying personnel at accident-prone and congestion hotspots.
“Efforts will also target preventing house break-ins, particularly in homes left unattended during the festive season,” he said after distributing goodie bags and helmets to motorcyclists during the launch of the operation at Farley Samarahan here.
A total of 750 officers from various PDRM branches will be involved.
Residents can inform police before leaving home via the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) app, SMS, visiting the nearest station, or completing the ‘balik kampung’ form on the PDRM portal.
Goods vehicles will be restricted from major roads on March 19 and 20, as well as March 28 and 29, in line with Transport Ministry regulations.
Saifullizan highlighted improvements in road safety, noting 332 accidents were recorded during last year’s Hari Raya period, down from 354 in 2024.
“Fatal accidents also fell from seven to five.
“Kuching recorded the highest number of accidents with 87 cases, followed by Miri with 50 cases and Padawan with 43 cases,” he said.
He urged road users to drive cautiously, adjust speed according to conditions, avoid travelling while fatigued or under the influence of alcohol, and ensure motorcyclists wear helmets at all times.
He added that strict action will be taken against traffic law violations.
The operation also aims to safeguard properties and homes, helping residents enjoy a safer festive season.
