SARAWAK will boost its pepper industry with new technologies and a 10,000 hectares expansion plan, said Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom.
He told the august House that this comes amid declining export volumes.
However, he said Sarawak continues to dominate the national pepper sector, producing over 98 per cent of Malaysia’s output.
“As of September 2025, the state recorded 8,148 hectares of pepper cultivate—a slight increase of 20 hectares compared to the same period last year.
“However, the industry is facing some challenges that may slow down growth. Between January and September this year, Sarawak’s pepper exports fell by 33 per cent, dropping from 4,580 metric tonnes to 3,093 tonnes.
“Export value also dipped by four per cent, from RM128 million in 2024 to RM123 million over the same period this year,” he said in his ministerial winding-up speech.
He said the new technologies include feritigation systems and the application of Internet of Things.
“These innovations aim to raise productivity, reduce labour dependency, and reduce production costs—key steps towards ensuring long-term industry sustainability.”
He said modernising the industry is expected to attract greater youth participation, which is a critical factor in sustaining its future growth.
Dr Rundi also welcomed the proposal from the federal Ministry of Plantation and Commodities to develop 10,000 hectares of new pepper planting in Sarawak, and said that with adequate federal funding, his ministry was ready to facilitate the initiative and identify suitable land.
“This expansion will strengthen Sarawak’s position as the nation’s primary pepper producer,” he said.
