MIRI (Feb 19): The close working relationship between the federal and Sarawak governments was highlighted during a Chinese New Year (CNY) visit by Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Chiew Choon Man to Pakatan Harapan (PH) Sarawak secretary Alan Ling on the first day of the festive celebration.

The visit underscored ongoing collaboration between leaders at both federal and state levels in advancing development initiatives and safeguarding the interests of Sarawak, particularly in Miri.

Chiew, who is Miri MP, and Ling have been working closely on programmes aimed at serving the local community and regularly engage in discussions to coordinate policies and initiatives that benefit the people.

Ling noted that although PH Sarawak functions as part of the opposition in the state political landscape, it remains a component of the federal ruling coalition led by Prime Minister and PH chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“PH Sarawak now has two deputy ministers at the federal level, namely Mordi Bimol (Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports) and Chiew,” he said.

“Additionally, we have one Deputy Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, four Members of Parliament and one senator in the Dewan Negara.

“We will continue to speak up and fight for the interests of Sarawak,” said Ling.

He added that PH would carry out its role as a constructive opposition in Sarawak while actively contributing at the federal level to advocate policies that benefit the state.

Ling also highlighted that PH Sabah chairman Datuk Ts Mustapha Sakmud has been entrusted with overseeing Sabah and Sarawak affairs as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, describing it as a reflection of the federal government’s commitment to fulfilling the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and recognising Sabah and Sarawak as equal partners in the federation.

On sports development, Ling, who is also a National Sports Council (MSN) management board member, expressed optimism about the year ahead, particularly as preparations gather pace for the 2027 SEA Games, during which Sarawak will host several events.

“This once again demonstrates the collaboration between the federal and state governments in sports development, as well as the political maturity and cordial relationship between Putrajaya and the Sarawak government,” he said.
