MIRI (Sept 5): A ground-breaking hydrogen testbed and refuelling station have been launched in Curtin Malaysia campus here as a step forward in Sarawak’s journey towards a sustainable and energy-efficient future.
The launching ceremony of this pilot project which is a collaboration between Curtin Malaysia and Solarvest Borneo was performed by Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, representing Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today.
Professor Vincent Lee Chieng Chen, Pro Vice-Chancellor and acting chief executive of Curtin Malaysia, said as one of the first facilities of its kind in this region, the testbed is a testament to the university’s commitment to pioneering research and innovation in renewable energy.
This pilot project aligns with Sarawak’s energy transition aspirations, particularly as outlined in the state’s Post-Covid Development Strategy 2030.
“Hydrogen, as many of you know, holds immense potential as a clean energy source, and our investment in this technology underscores our dedication to contributing to a greener and more sustainable future,” said Vincent.
By advancing hydrogen energy research and development, the university is not only supporting the state’s goals but also positioning itself as leaders in the global energy transition.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our partners, stakeholders and everyone involved in making this project a reality.
“Your support has been invaluable, and together, we are setting the stage for a future where clean and sustainable energy is not just a possibility, but a reality,” he added.
The testbed offers opportunities to explore various aspects of renewable energy including solar photovoltaics, electrolysis process and hydrogen storage.
The testbed and refuelling system will be located at Curtin Aquaculture Research Laboratory, where the 20kWp of solar panels will be installed at the rooftop of the laboratory building.
The hydrogen testbed consists of an electrolyser stack system, a 30bar/1,000L hydrogen storage, and a 100L deionised water tank to support the electrolysis process while two hydrogen bikes are purchased for use within the campus.
Also present at the launch were Miri deputy mayor Ariffin Mohamed, Petros senior vice-president (Sarawak Resource Management) Nazrin Banu Shaikh Sajjad Ahmad, and other industry partners.
