MIRI (Sept 11): Pusat Kegiatan Masyarakat (PKM) Miri, upon the completion of its building premises here in May 2026, will serve as the centre of technical, vocational, education and training (TVET).
Community Development Department (Kemas) director-general Datuk Ahmad Kamal Idris Nawawi said this at the project’s earth-breaking ceremony in Lutong here today.
He said the centre would offer classes on sewing, personal grooming, computing, and cooking, targeting youths, women, and small and medium enterprise entrepreneurs.
“We will provide instructors, equipment, and free training to the community who are interested in improving their skills,” he said.
Elaborating further, Ahmad Kamal said the PKM building costs RM14,696,000 and is expected to be completed on May 11, 2026.
The new premises, he said, will house an administrative block, an academic block comprising lecture rooms and activity centres, as well as a multi-purpose hall that can hold up to 200 pax and which can be used by the local community with a minimal charge.
The premises, he added, will also function as the administration office for Kemas Miri division and the Sibuti district.
According to him, there are altogether 64 PKM nationwide, out of which five are in Sarawak.
“Two of the five centres in Miri and Samariang, Kuching are under construction with a modern design concept.
“Sarawak is indeed lucky because two PKM have been approved to be built this year with a total cost including consultant costs amounting to RM50 million,” he said, while calling upon the contractor to carry out the task efficiently and ensure that it is completed on time.
Present at the groundbreaking ceremony were Kemas Sarawak director Anisah Saidin; Public Works Department senior civil engineer Edalyana Jee; and Glorium Sdn Bhd contract project manager Wong King Kan.
