KUCHING (March 13): Sarawak has surpassed several other Malaysian states in key sectors, including energy and electrical and electronics (E&E), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He credited the state’s progress to the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“I am not using this opportunity merely to praise my friend for hosting this dinner. I have observed that in Sarawak’s leadership, Premier Abang Johari brings new ideas every time I visit.

“He ensures these ideas are thoroughly pursued among his ministers, public servants, and the private sector.

“This is the kind of leadership the nation needs, emphasising what is called creative destruction. Even in the face of challenges, he finds new ways to resolve issues and rebuild creatively,” Anwar said during the Sarawak-level Madani 2026 iftar at Masjid Jamek Negeri Sarawak here.

He said with strong domestic resilience, diligence and productivity across sectors, Sarawak’s development in E&E — including chip manufacturing — was particularly impressive.

“The state has not only advanced energy and E&E projects but has clearly surpassed the achievements of several other states. I congratulate them. Alhamdulillah, this makes us proud,” he said.

Anwar also touched on broader economic challenges facing Malaysia, particularly the impact of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

He noted that conflicts involving Israel, the United States and Iran have pushed global oil prices higher, with crude exceeding US$100 per barrel, while shipping routes and supplies have also been disrupted.

He highlighted the need for careful policy planning to protect Malaysians from rising costs.

Anwar said the government remains committed to maintaining RON95 petrol prices at RM1.99 per litre despite rising global oil prices, adding that diesel subsidies are also under review.

“We must take prudent measures and act immediately rather than wait for crises to hit. This includes improving governance, controlling leakages, and promoting a simpler lifestyle,” he said.

He also urged Malaysians to remain disciplined in managing resources, citing food wastage as a concern.

“We must learn from the lessons of Surah Yusuf and the Bible’s story of seven fat years followed by seven lean years — preparing ourselves for both abundance and scarcity,” he said.

On domestic development, Anwar confirmed the federal government’s approval of RM150 million to repair the Sungai Sarawak Barrage.

He also assured that other critical projects in Sarawak would be expedited in close collaboration with the state government.

“Some of these projects are crucial for water and electricity supply for the people. Where possible, we will ensure faster implementation in cooperation with the Sarawak government,” he said.

Anwar also highlighted education initiatives aimed at integrating pondok and tahfiz students into mainstream learning, including exposure to English, history and artificial intelligence (AI).

He announced a RM2.69 million allocation to support these programmes.

Anwar concluded by emphasising Ramadan as a time for reflection, unity and strengthening faith.

“May Ramadan bring renewal and enhance our faith, as well as our spirit of unity among religions and races in Sarawak and Malaysia,” he said.
