SIBU (March 30): Political parties must be bold enough to be honest with themselves to ensure the strength and continuity of their struggle, said Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
He said a party’s weaknesses often stemmed from internal division, rather than external threats.
“Leaders and members at all levels must preserve unity and discipline to ensure the party remains relevant and strong.
“In politics, we must be honest with ourselves. Sometimes, a party becomes weak not because of external enemies, but due to division from within,” he said in his speech during the PDP Dudong Division Triennial General Meeting at the Durin basketball court here yesterday.
His speech was read by political secretary Joshua Ting.
Tiong also highlighted the importance of understanding and supporting the state government’s policies under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who is steering Sarawak towards becoming a low-carbon energy hub.
“PDP members must understand government policies, explain them to the community, and convince the people this is the best direction for Sarawak. PDP members are not only supporters, but key movers responsible for delivering the party’s mission and policies to the grassroots.
“Leaders must also consistently go to the ground, instead of only appearing during election season. Do not expect the people to come to us—we must reach out to understand their needs and issues,” he said.
Touching on the party’s role within the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition, he emphasised that unity coalition must continue to be strengthened through cooperation and mutual respect among component parties.
He said Sarawak’s current political stability stems from GPS’ cohesion, forming the foundation for continuous development in the state.
“Only with strong unity can we ensure the people’s interests are protected and Sarawak’s development continues smoothly,” he said.
Also present were Meluan assemblyman Rolland Duat Jubin, political secretary Brian Fong, and PDP Dudong chairman Datuk Teo Boon Siew.
