KUCHING (Feb 8): Positive media narratives are vital in supporting Sarawak’s nation-building agenda.

This was highlighted by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian at the Media Appreciation Luncheon 2026, hosted by the Federation of Chinese Associations Kuching-Samarahan-Serian Division (FCAKSS) at a restaurant here yesterday.

Adding on, Dr Sim stressed that the role of those in both social and mainstream media extended beyond merely reporting events, as they could also help shape positive public perception and foster closer unity among the people.

“For Sarawak nation-building, we need positive narratives.

“Sarawak is now at a stage where the rest of the country looks to with high expectations for leadership and progress.

“That means we must change the narrative: everyone must do well; the Chinese community must do well; Sarawak news media must do well.

“You must play your role and do your part,” he said in his speech.

Dr Sim then cautioned against excessive negativity and politically-driven reporting, warning that such approaches could undermine long-term unity and development.

In acknowledging the importance of fair and balanced reporting, he urged the media to also focus on constructive and inspiring coverage.

On the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI), misinformation and online scams, Dr Sim called upon both the public and media practitioners to be more vigilant and responsible in verifying information before sharing it.

“We are into that era: the AI era, the fake news era – true or not, (we) don’t know.

“But I think as we increasingly become smarter, less and less people get cheated.”

Also present at the luncheon were FCAKSS president Dato Sri Richard Wee and vice-president Chew Kien Liang.
