KUCHING, Feb 13: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has approved an additional 15 acres of land to develop 60 more housing units in Santubong, bringing the total to 120 units under the Rumah Spektra Permata (RSP) project.
The approval comes as the Sarawak government handed over 62 house keys to successful applicants today, while noting that demand far exceeds supply, with around 200 applications received for the Santubong scheme.
“Out of 200 applicants, only 60 units were available. After discussions with Pantai Damai assemblyman Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Sarawak Land and Survey Director Datuk Abdullah Julaihi, Housing Development Corporation (HDC) chief executive officer Fathi Hambali, and another official, I have approved an additional 15 acres to develop another 60 housing units. This brings the total to 120 units,” he said.
Speaking to reporters afterwards, Abang Johari explained that the State could plan an additional 500 to 1,000 housing units, depending on land availability and demand, once the new road network between Buntal and Bako is completed by the end of the year.
In another development, Abang Johari also urged the public’s cooperation as Santubong undergoes major infrastructure upgrades.
“Santubong is part of Kuching’s growth. You can see cranes across the city, and soon they will arrive here because we are building a new road. The existing road is uneven and congested. We plan to construct a new four-lane road from Yayasan Sarawak Roundabout to Pantai Damai,” he said.
He added that the dual carriageway project will include a second Santubong Bridge, and the road will be divided into three lanes, including a special lane for bicycles and motorcycles.
“I ask for your cooperation over the next three years, as there will be a lot of work to organise this project,” he said, adding that traffic jams are expected during construction.
Eventually, he said, Santubong will become a prime area in Kuching, with the newly launched Santubong Archaeological Park and future plans for a long cruise jetty to boost tourism.
Also present were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian; Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, Kuching North City Commission and Islamic Affairs) and Pantai Damai assemblyman Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi; Housing Development Corporation (HDC) chairman Abdul Yakub Arbi; and HDC chief executive officer Fathi Hambali. — DayakDaily
