KUCHING (Sept 13): New laws regulating the wireless transmission of energy should be introduced to keep pace with technological advancements, said the Premier.

Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg noted that ongoing research by Siemens and Swinburne University in Australia could soon lead to technology capable of transferring energy wirelessly, eliminating the need for cables.

“It’s similar to the internet, like WiFi. If this becomes a reality, we will need to draft laws that are relevant to the current situation.

“In terms of energy laws, amendments will be necessary to accommodate the new technology.

“Otherwise, the transfer of energy without cables would be illegal. If that happens, we would need an ordinance to regulate power generation,” he told reporters after officiating at the 2024 Conference of Parliamentary and State Assembly Speakers of Malaysia at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex here today.

Asked if the new laws would be presented at federal or state level, Abang Johari said that it would depend on the respective jurisdictions.

“If it falls under federal jurisdiction, we will rely on federal laws.

“As the government, we must propose laws that are relevant to new technologies, including the internet. These laws are needed to regulate emerging industries,” he said.

In his speech, Abang Johari shared his recent discovery that energy can be transmitted from one location to another without using cables or wires.

“This means energy from House A to House B and House C won’t require cables or grids.

“The technology, similar to a power bank, is currently under research, and Sarawak will also be conducting similar research. Therefore, our laws must evolve – otherwise, energy theft could occur,” he explained.
