KUCHING, Sept 27: Affin Bank Berhad (Affin) can play a pivotal role in bridging the gap for underserved segments of society, who often face challenges in accessing formal banking services due to various barriers.
Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasised this after the Sarawak government, through its wholly-owned subsidiary SG Assetfin Holdings Sdn Bhd, signed a share purchase agreement (SPA) to become the largest shareholder of Affin with a 31.25 per cent stake.
Speaking at the signing ceremony between the Sarawak government, the Armed Forces Fund Board (Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera, LTAT), and Boustead Holdings Bhd at the Sheraton Hotel today, Abang Johari called for greater financial inclusion.
He urged Affin to provide easier access to banking services, microfinancing solutions, and financial literacy programmes for underserved communities.
“Together, we can empower these individuals and businesses, supporting their journey towards self-sufficiency,” he said.
Abang Johari also highlighted Affin’s crucial role in supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are the backbone of the economy.
He expressed confidence that Affin’s comprehensive range of banking products and services, particularly in trade finance and commercial lending, makes it an ideal financial partner for SMEs.
“With Affin’s support, SMEs can expand their operations, innovate, and create employment opportunities for the people,” he pointed out.
He further outlined Sarawak’s broader strategy to achieve a high-income economy, which includes diversifying economic sectors, reducing dependency on natural resources, and attracting investments to create sustainable jobs.
“Affin can play a significant role by supporting the growth of strategic industries such as agro-based ventures, tourism, manufacturing, and technology-driven sectors.
“Affin can provide the financial tools and guidance necessary for businesses to flourish in these sectors,” he added.
Abang Johari reaffirmed the importance of the partnership between Sarawak and Affin in fostering economic growth and financial inclusion, stating, “Our collaboration with Affin is crucial in creating a prosperous future for Sarawak.”
Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, LTAT chairman General Tan Sri Dato Sri Azizan Ariffin, and Affin Bank Berhad president and Group chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Wan Razly Abdullah were present. — DayakDaily
