MIRI, Apr 25: Miri could be transformed into a coastal city akin to Shanghai with the development of a new offshore port and coastal township at Kuala Baram, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said the transformation would be driven by scientific findings on hydraulic flow at the Baram estuary, which could naturally lead to the formation of new land for future development.
Abang Johari explained that the natural hydraulic flow at Kuala Baram, which causes the river mouth to shift over time, results in continuous sediment deposition.
“The land can gradually form, and once that happens, we can develop it into industrial and commercial zones.
“It will transform the landscape of Kuala Baram into an attractive coastal township, with sea-facing buildings that offer premium value.
“If this can be realised, Insya Allah Miri can become like Shanghai in China,” he said when officiating at the Miri-level Sarawakku Sayang 2026 programme at Miri Stadium here today.
Abang Johari said earlier plans had considered Miri Port as an inland port due to challenges posed by the Baram estuary.
However, further studies had identified a solution, allowing for the development of an offshore port instead.
“Based on our studies, we propose to build the port in the sea, about seven to eight kilometres from the Baram estuary,” he said.
He added that the State government had approved funding to proceed with the development, which would serve as a key export exit point for goods from Miri’s hinterland, including palm oil, timber and new products.
He said existing shipping activities along the Miri River would be relocated to Kuala Baram, allowing the city’s waterfront to be redeveloped.
“This will beautify Miri city and improve the living environment for residents,” he said.
He added that the offshore port would also be able to accommodate large vessels, including cruise ships, boosting tourism in line with Sarawak’s Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
