KUCHING (March 2): The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) state government advocates fairness and meaningful cooperation in the orderly exploitation of the state’s resources, said the Premier.
Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the government under his leadership will continue to fight for the state’s rights, particularly over oil and gas resources.
“It is not our intention to confront any party in this struggle and the involvement of the courts to determine our rights is the last resort that the GPS government will have to take,” he said at the Federation of Chinese Associations Kuching-Samarahan-Serian Division Chinese New Year Dinner 2026 here on Sunday.
His speech, delivered by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, comes amid the legal dispute between Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros).
Abang Johari asserted: “Sarawak’s success belongs to every Sarawakian,” adding that with unity, trust, and cooperation as their foundation, the state is set to achieve greater prosperity and stability.
He said the Chinese New Year event was an integral part of the state’s multicultural identity, while lauding the significance of the Chinese community in Sarawak’s development.
“From the early days of pioneering and commerce to today’s contributions in the economy, education, technology, and professional sectors, the Chinese community has always been an important driving force behind Sarawak’s progress,” he said.
He noted that the annual grant to Chinese independent schools has been increased from RM3 million to RM10 million, reflecting the state government’s commitment to supporting Chinese-based education in Sarawak.
“In addition, land has been allocated for commercial development to support the development of Chinese independent schools. This is not a short-term policy, but a long-term decision grounded on historical understanding and practical needs,” he said.
Abang Johari also lauded the federation for its proactive and constructive role in uniting Chinese associations, while maintaining active communication and cooperation with the state government, as well as offering valuable views and proposals.
“Without your trust and assistance, many policies would be difficult to implement effectively. We welcome responsible, rational, and dialogue-oriented organisations like the federation to work hand in hand with the government in serving the people,” he said.
He also announced an allocation of RM200,000 from the state government for the federation.
Among those present were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, federation president Dato Sri Richard Wee Liang Chiat, and vice-president Wilson Tan.
