KUCHING (Oct 29): Sarawak is exploring the ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) technology to generate renewable energy, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Speaking at a press conference after officiating at the Sarawak Sustainability Insights (SSM) 2024 conference at a hotel here today, he said OTEC utilises the temperature difference between warmer surface seawater and cooler, deeper waters to generate power.
“This approach is especially relevant in tropical regions like ours, where we have high temperatures and the necessary oceanic conditions.
“Our geographical positioning along a continental shelf may offer unique advantages for generating ocean-based energy,” he added.
Abang Johari noted that ocean thermal energy compression, though new to Sarawak, could complement existing renewable initiatives, such as wave kinetic energy.
“If this proves viable, Sarawak could generate green, renewable energy and, should we have surplus, share it with our neighbouring countries,” he said.
He said the state is still in the preliminary research phase, with studies likely to span up to one and a half year.
However, he expressed confidence in the data, suggesting that conditions are favourable for this venture.
“There is a high chance that we will conduct the study offshore near Miri, as its coastal landscape and geological conditions provide a conducive setting.
“The seas off Miri, including areas in Balingian and Mukah, are geographically ideal. The depth aligns well with the thermal conditions needed, with warmer surface temperatures and sufficiently cool depths below,” he explained.
