KUCHING, April 28: Sarawak is placing growing emphasis on signal technologies, semiconductor chips and aerospace development as it positions itself to harness the next wave of artificial intelligence (AI).

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg highlighted that Sarawak is preparing for the emergence of “strategic AI”, which is expected to shape global economies in the coming years.

“We are now giving emphasis on signals related to aerospace. The future will depend on the power of chips, data in the cloud and signals transmitted through satellites,” he said when addressing the 16th International Unimas Engineering Conference (EnCon 2026) opening ceremony at a hotel here today.

Abang Johari explained that AI has evolved rapidly, from generative AI to agentic AI, and soon to strategic AI, which integrates complex processes and relies heavily on sovereign data.

“In the next five years, strategic AI will dominate. Data has been termed the new oil. It will determine the future of the global economy,” he said.

He noted that the effectiveness of this new AI era hinges on infrastructure such as satellites, which collect vast amounts of Earth data and transmit it back for analysis and application.

To capitalise on this, Sarawak is working towards comprehensive data mapping of the State through its Land and Survey Department to support more precise and informed development planning.

“With accurate data distributed through technology, we can plan our future better and move forward with confidence,” he added.

Abang Johari also called on academic institutions, particularly Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), to explore advancements in aerospace engineering and related fields to support this strategic direction.

He stressed that future engineers will play a critical role in integrating disciplines, from mechanical and chemical engineering to aerospace, in driving Sarawak’s digital and technological transformation.

“This is why engineering is so important. We need new talent to guide us in this new era,” he said.

Abang Johari reiterated that the convergence of data, chips and satellite-driven signals will redefine industries and governance, making early adoption and preparedness crucial.

“With the right strategy and talent, Sarawak can leverage these technologies for sustainable growth and long-term resilience.

“With that, I wish the conference all the best. I look forward to the outcome of this conference,” he said.
