MIRI, Feb 27: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has called on more youths, particularly from the Chinese community, to join the Sarawak civil service to better reflect the State’s rich demographic diversity.

In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, he stressed that unity in diversity remains Sarawak’s defining strength and the cornerstone of its inclusive development agenda.

“Broader participation of young professionals in the public sector is vital to sustain the State’s development momentum and build a more progressive and resilient future,”he said in a speech text read by Deputy Premier Sim Kui Hian at the Federation of Chinese Associations Miri Division Chinese New Year Celebration on Thursday (Feb 26).

In advancing human capital development, Abang Johari said the Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) enables all Sarawakians to pursue higher education at State-owned institutions regardless of background, further strengthening the State’s talent pipeline.

“Sarawak’s education policy is firmly anchored in meritocracy, ensuring every Sarawakian child, irrespective of educational stream, is given equal opportunity to realise their potential,” he said.

On Chinese education, he reaffirmed continued State support, highlighting the increase in annual allocations from RM3 million to RM10 million, benefiting 14 Chinese independent secondary schools statewide.

“In addition, the government has provided land for commercial development to help these schools generate sustainable income,” he added.

Abang Johari also highlighted the longstanding and pivotal role of the Chinese community in Sarawak’s development, particularly their contributions in commerce, education, technology and the professions, which have been instrumental in driving the State’s economic growth and social advancement.

He expressed appreciation to the federation for its sustained efforts in fostering unity and serving as a vital bridge between the community and the government.

“Celebrations such as Chinese New Year embody the true identity of Sarawakians, a society shaped by diverse ethnicities, faiths and cultures, yet united by a shared purpose and collective progress.

“The Sarawak government remains committed to inclusive governance, working closely with civil society organisations to ensure policies are responsive and genuinely address the needs of the people,” he said.

Also present were Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Deputy Minister for Tourism Datuk Sebastian Ting, Miri City Mayor Adam Yii, Telang Usan assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau, Registrar of Societies (ROS) Sarawak director Hajiawati Tambi and Miri Division Resident Galong Luang. — DayakDaily
