KUCHING, Dec 20: Zakat contributions by commercial entities are regarded as one of the key mechanisms in supporting inclusive socioeconomic development in Sarawak, as it not only benefits Muslims but also allows the State government to develop infrastructure that can be utilised by all, regardless of race or religion.

“When this is the case, we invest, whether in development, economic activities or education,” said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during the opening ceremony of the Sri Aman Islamic Complex today.

The Premier said that the Sarawak government treats all communities fairly, as reflected in the establishment of the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor), making Sarawak the only State in the country to have such a unit.

He added that the approach aligns with the principles of Islamic governance practised by Prophet Muhammad SAW when leading Madinah, which emphasised fairness and shared welfare.

“As a leader, I am fair to both Muslims and non-Muslims. That is why we have Unifor, as well as why the Sarawak government recognises the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC),” he said.

He added that many Bumiputera students study in mission and Chinese schools in Sarawak, and that by supporting these institutions, the State government is investing in the education and future of the next generation as a whole.

“This is our way—we are fair in our administration, and the spirit of zakat is our means of helping the wider community,” he said.

Also present were Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Auditor General of Malaysia Datuk Seri Wan Suraya Wan Mohd Radzi, Sarawak Islamic Council president Datuk Misnu Taha, and Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak general manager Datu Abang Mohammad Shibli Abang Mohd Nailie. — DayakDaily
