KUCHING (April 4): A proposal to build a new Lundu District Police Headquarters (IPD Lundu) is currently under discussion, with two potential sites identified, says Dato Sri Nancy Shukri.

The Women, Family and Community Development Minister said the proposal remains at a preliminary stage, with locations identified opposite and adjacent to Centexs Lundu, but not yet finalised as the matter requires state-level consideration since the land falls under the state government.

She was speaking to reporters during a visit to IPD Lundu following a contribution handover ceremony under the Rangkaian Kasih NS Programme on Friday.

Lundu district police chief Supt Sudirman Kram, who was present, said the existing IPD Lundu building, constructed in 1975, is nearing 50 years old and no longer meets current operational requirements.

On a related matter, it was revealed that an upgrading project for the Sematan police station has been approved under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), while the proposal for IPD Lundu is still at the discussion stage.

“The Sematan project involves demolishing an existing wooden structure and replacing it with a permanent building at an estimated cost of RM2 million.

“Sematan is smaller than Lundu, which is why I strongly support the proposal for a new IPD Lundu building based on their operational needs,” Nancy said.

She added that no cost estimate has been determined for the proposed IPD Lundu project, as a formal proposal must first be submitted through the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) for assessment.

Earlier, contributions were presented to IPD Lundu, including two canopy sets, 100 chairs and three tables to support operational and logistical needs.

“From 2023 to 2025, a total of RM836,101 has been allocated for canopies, public address (PA) systems and solar lighting, channelled to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the police to improve facilities,” Nancy said.

“We are always open to assisting as these facilities are important service points for the public,” she added.

Meanwhile, Sudirman expressed appreciation for the contributions, reaffirming IPD Lundu’s commitment to serving the community.
