SIBU (Feb 8): All Chinese community leaders must set aside political differences and focus fully on their responsibility to serve the people.
In stressing this, Sibu Division Chinese Community Leaders president Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau reminded them about their appointment being about serving the community and acting as the government’s frontliners.
“Therefore, as community leaders, you must not mix politics into your roles when serving the people.
“I hope all community leaders can put aside political differences, because we are here to serve the people.
“We are the government’s frontliners. This is very important,” he pointed out during a press conference held here yesterday, which discussed the association’s upcoming annual general meeting (AGM).
Recalling past committee elections, Lau observed that some community leaders aligned with certain political affiliations were not selected, resulting in their reduced participation in activities organised by the association over the past year.
He described the situation as ‘a form of conflict, arising from differences of opinions and dissatisfaction following the election’.
“The association never encourages any form of boycott over the activities being organised.
“This association was not established by the current leadership; it was founded by our past leaders, meant to strengthen the cooperation, unity and ties among the community leaders.
“The association has functioned well in the past by organising various activities, including talks and seminars, to enhance the knowledge of community leaders so that they can serve the public more effectively,” he pointed out.
On the AGM, Lau said it would take place at Tanahmas Hotel here this March 7, with the session to commence at 5pm.
“This year is not an election year, so the AGM will not involve the election of a new committee.
“However, the agenda will focus on the presentation of the secretary’s Report and the president’s report.
“Members wishing to submit motions or raise questions are required to fill in the forms available at the KTS office, and submit them before Feb 25,” he reminded the attendees.
Lau said after the AGM, there would be a Chinese New Year celebration event, scheduled to kick off at around 6.30pm.
“Some 30 to 35 tables have been arranged for the event, and participation is open to the members.
“The price for one table is set at RM400, while individual tickets are priced at RM40, with parts of the event’s cost subsidised by the association,” he added.
Lau also informed that the association would extend the invitation to Sibu Resident Abang Mohamad Porkan Abang Budiman.
