KUCHING (Dec 7): Communities impacted by quarry activities in Bau have received RM289,000 in assistance through the Kuching Division Public Works Department’s (JKR) Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund.
According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report, a total of 26 recipients, including villages, houses of worship and schools located near quarry operation sites, received the contribution during a cheque handover ceremony in Bau on Friday.
Serembu assemblyman Dato Miro Simuh said the allocation reflects JKR’s commitment to easing the challenges faced by residents living close to quarry sites.
He also urged quarry operators in Bau to shoulder greater responsibility by repairing roads damaged by heavy vehicles, stressing the importance of maintaining safety for all road users.
Kuching Division Land and Survey superintendent Awang Nazei Awang Saperi said the CSR initiative, introduced in 2018, forms part of JKR’s efforts to balance development with community welfare.
“This programme is aimed at reducing the social and infrastructural impact of quarry operations. It helps ensure that development progresses without compromising the well-being of local communities,” he said.
The event also saw 10 recipients from the Serembu constituency being presented with the Sarawak Bumiputera Recognition Certificate in acknowledgment of their contributions to community development.
Present were Bau District Officer Eddy Nayoi, Bau District Council secretary Ong Chin Ping, and Sarawak Land and Survey Department enforcement chief Thian Choon Kui.
