KUCHING, Dec 24: The Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) Sarawak Chapter has been awarded the prestigious Best NGO Award – Community Network & Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Category, in recognition of its 31 years of steadfast service as a quiet but pivotal force in crime prevention across the State.
Its national recognition was formalised during the Anugerah Perdana NGO Malaysia 2025 ceremony at Sunway Resort Hotel, Bandar Sunway, Selangor on Tuesday (Dec 23), where senior vice president Datuk Kamarudin Md Ali received the award from Melaka Head of State Tun Mohd Ali Rustam.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail, MCPF Sarawak secretary Leonard Sabu as well as MCPF exco members Chan Kuang Yu and Datuk Mark Foo Wei were present.
The nomination, endorsed by prominent foundations, Universiti Putra Malaysia, and the Prime Minister’s Department, marks the first time an non-governmental organisation (NGO) from Sarawak has received this honour.
“This award belongs not only to our committee but to every volunteer, supporter, officer, and Sarawakian who believes in community safety,” MCPF Sarawak said in a media release.

Leveraging its official Facebook platform, the Foundation engages the public with updates, educational content, and community programmes that promote awareness on crime prevention and social responsibility.
Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit, now serves as an ex-officio member, supporting MCPF’s collaboration with academia.
The Foundation has also spearheaded the Sarawak White Paper on Crime Prevention, developed with Unimas Faculty of Science, providing policy-based frameworks for State-level crime reduction strategies.
In recognition of its advisory role, MCPF Sarawak was appointed as a member of the Sarawak Social Development Council, under the Ministry of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, led by Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah.
Its publications, including the pioneering “Prisoner’s Guilt & Rejoining Society After Prison” and the award-winning “No to Drugs”, have become reference materials for schools, NGOs, and law enforcement.
The Foundation also actively implements Neighbourhood Watch Programmes, town hall dialogues, and community sessions across Sarawak, addressing issues such as drug abuse, theft, and youth delinquency.
Its outreach extends to schools, NGOs, and civic organisations, with joint programmes for youth, single mothers, and community awareness campaigns, impacting an estimated 150,000 readers through weekly newspaper articles and ongoing media collaborations.
For 31 years, MCPF Sarawak has proven that commitment, discipline, and integrity can overcome the limitations of funding and manpower.
Looking ahead, MCPF Sarawak remains committed to expanding its collaboration with PDRM, reaching rural communities, enhancing youth leadership, and promoting crime prevention education, underscoring its belief that community safety is a shared responsibility.
From humble beginnings to national recognition, MCPF Sarawak stands as a backbone of crime prevention in Malaysia, a quiet force whose legacy continues to safeguard the people and future of Sarawak. — DayakDaily
