KUCHING (Oct 30): The federal Ministry of Economy is keen on engaging with the Sarawak government for the implementation of carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) development initiatives, said its Minister Rafizi Ramli.
Rafizi was cited by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) as saying that Sarawak is among four states identified with significant potential to serve as CCUS hubs in the next five years, alongside Sabah, Terengganu, and Pahang.
As such, he emphasised the importance of aligning federal and state regulations to ensure smooth implementation of CCUS initiatives.
He noted that the federal government aims to table comprehensive CCUS legislation by the end of the year, while Sarawak has already established its own regulatory framework under state law.
Highlighting Sarawak’s advantage in positioning itself as a prominent player, Rafizi noted the economic and environmental potential of successful CCUS projects.
“In the case of Sarawak, our focus was on harmonising state and federal laws to streamline CCUS development.
“I am encouraged that everyone is on board to support Malaysia’s progress. CCUS is a high-tech initiative that, if successfully implemented in the next five years, will put us ahead.
“It will create many high-paying jobs and elevate our leadership in the energy transition,” he said following a courtesy call to the Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Wisma Bapa Malaysia today.
With discussions advancing in each of the four states, Rafizi expressed confidence in the nationwide momentum.
“Each of the four identified states has now conducted engagement sessions on CCUS legislation, setting a strong foundation for upcoming projects,” he said.
Also present during this courtesy call were Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, Minister in the Premier’s Department Dato Sri John Sikie Tayai, Deputy Minister of Economy Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib, State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Sarawak Financial Secretary Dato Sri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar and other government senior officers.
