KAPIT: Renowned Iban poetess Nyong Aji passed away here on January 5 at the age of 64.

According to a Facebook post by Nyong’s eldest daughter, Sim Ah Hua, the funeral wake will be held at the family house at Sungai Pelajau in Bukit Goram.

“The cause of my mother’s death will be confirmed after the issuance of the death certificate,” said Sim when contacted.

Nyong left behind a legacy that spanned over 30 years. She contributed significantly to the Dayak community through her mastery of traditional Iban poetry.

Nyong, originally from Teluk Buing in Kapit, not only produced several acclaimed ‘Pantun Iban’ albums but also showcased her skills on various prestigious platforms.

Learning the art solely through observation and practice, she absorbed the essence of ‘pantun’ by studying elders when they performed during special ceremonies at the longhouses in her younger days.

Her talent and dedication earned her invitations to perform for dignitaries, including a presentation for the then-Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah in 2001 and performances for former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Yang Di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, and the late Pehin Sri Datuk Patinggi Adenan Satem.

Nyong’s fame transcended regional boundaries as she was featured in national-level events and participated in by-invitation-only tours in Kuala Lumpur and Johor Baharu.

As the community mourns her loss, Nyong Aji’s impact on Sarawak’s cultural scene remains indelible and her contributions will be remembered for generations to come.

At press time, the Facebook post had been shared by 371 people, and the comment section was flooded with condolences mourning Nyong.
