SIBU (Feb 5): The public has been urged to allow the authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent inquiry into the tragic incident in Sibu Jaya that claimed the lives of three young children.

State Minister of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said the case is under police investigation and appealed to the public to refrain from speculation while respecting both the investigation process and the privacy of the grieving families.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic incident in Sibu Jaya which claimed the lives of three young children. The loss of such young lives is devastating and heartbreaking.

“As the case is now under police investigation, we must allow the authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent inquiry. It is important that we refrain from speculation and respect both the investigative process and the privacy of the grieving families,” she said in a statement.

She also highlighted that the tragedy underscores the need to ensure environments accessible to children are safe and properly safeguarded.

“All relevant stakeholders must review and strengthen preventive measures where necessary to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our children at all times. The protection of children remains our collective responsibility,” she added.

On behalf of the ministry, Fatimah extended condolences to the families of the victims.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this extremely difficult time. May they be granted strength, comfort and resilience as they cope with this profound loss,” she said.

The incident occurred on Wednesday when three children were found drowned in a sewage pond about 100 metres from the Sibu Jaya flats, raising renewed concerns over safety at restricted areas.

The victims, believed to be local residents, were discovered despite the area being fenced off by authorities.
