SARIKEI (March 16): Several river conservation and drainage improvement projects will be implemented in Bintangor and its surrounding areas to reduce the risk of flooding and riverbank erosion, said Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii.
The Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability said the projects are part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen irrigation and drainage systems, particularly in flood-prone rural areas.
“The implementation of these projects is part of our continuous efforts to ensure that drainage systems in rural areas remain in good condition and function efficiently.
“River conservation works are important to ensure smooth water flow while reducing the risk of riverbank erosion that could affect the safety of surrounding areas and the well-being of local residents,” he said in a speech for the river and tributary conservation works around Meradong District site handover ceremony on Saturday.
Huang was represented by Sarikei Parliamentary Service Centre officer Wong Soon Mee.
“We remain committed to improving basic infrastructure in rural areas, especially those related to water management and drainage systems in the Sarikei parliamentary constituency,” said the Sarikei MP and Repok assemblyman.
The projects will be implemented under the supervision of the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sarikei.
“Several locations have been identified for the conservation works. Among the areas involved are Sungai Binatang in the Palaie area involving one tributary and Sungai Tulai in the Koperasi Tulai and Jalan Tulai area involving three tributaries.
“Conservation works will also be carried out at Sungai Binatang along Jalan Chai Hing involving one tributary, at Sungai Padi along Jalan Sing Tung Kwong involving one tributary and at Sungai Bakong in the Jalan Sing Hua area involving one tributary,” he said.
The projects are expected to improve the efficiency of drainage systems in the affected areas while reducing the risk of flooding and erosion that could affect public facilities and residential areas, he said.
“We hope all planned projects can be implemented smoothly and completed according to schedule so that the local community can benefit from them in the near future,” he added.
