KUCHING (Feb 12): The Sarawak Unity Education Fund (SUEF) has contributed RM100,000 to the Sarawak Association for the Welfare of Intellectually Disabled Children (Perkata) in support of the association’s ongoing educational and welfare programmes for children with disabilities.

SUEF chairman Datuk Richard Lee Say Tshin said organisations such as Perkata require sustained support from the private sector to strengthen their educational initiatives and ensure long-term sustainability.

“We encourage more private sectors to come forward and support Perkata, which operates a school dedicated to children with disabilities,” he said, as cited in the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report.

Lee noted that Perkata has served the community for 54 years and continues to rely on donations to provide education and care for children with special needs.

“It is a noble undertaking. It is not an easy task, yet the association has persevered for more than five decades. We hope our modest contribution will inspire others to lend their support,” he added.

Lee made these remarks at a press conference after paying a courtesy call on Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Kompleks Satria Pertiwi here yesterday.

The latest contribution marks SUEF’s second donation to Perkata, recognising the association’s efforts in delivering specialised education and care in the Kuching area.

In addition to supporting welfare organisations, Lee said SUEF remains committed to advancing access to education across Sarawak.

To date, the fund has awarded 31 scholarships to eligible Sarawakian students, amounting to a total of RM1.4 million.

Also present at the ceremony were Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain and SUEF treasurer Datu Laura Lee Ngien Hion.
