A traditional ‘miring’ ceremony is performed during the groundbreaking of the Selangau Mini Sports Complex.

SIBU (Feb 11): The RM11.5-million Selangau Mini Sports Complex is a strategic initiative by the Sarawak government to provide modern and standardised sports facilities for rural communities, said State Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

He said the project had been delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, site issues, design adjustments, and financial problems with the previous contractor.

Realignment measures have since been carried out, and a new contractor has been appointed to commence work immediately, with completion expected in November next year.

“This complex will feature a 400-metre, nine-lane running track, a Fifa-standard football field built to completion specifications, and several supporting facilities.

“Improvements will also be made from time to time based on community needs,” he told a press conference after officiating the groundbreaking ceremony.

Abdul Karim emphasised the importance of reasonable rental rates for facilities to ensure rural youth can access them without financial constraints.

“We do not want these facilities to be difficult to access due to high rental costs. Our aim is for village youths to fully utilise them for sports activities,” he explained.

The complex will be managed by the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC), which oversees the state’s sports facilities.

In a related development, Abdul Karim said upgrading works on various sports facilities across Sarawak are underway in preparation for the 2027 SEA Games.

“Facilities being upgraded include the state’s main stadium, shooting range, squash and tennis courts, swimming venues, and other competition-standard facilities.

“We are confident all preparations will be completed three to four months before September 2027 to ensure smooth organisation of the Games,” he said.

Also present at the event were Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang and senator Rita Sarimah Patrick Insol.
