KUCHING, May 19: The upgrading and redevelopment of Taman Jubli Bukit Aup in Sibu has received an approved allocation of RM11 million under Rolling Plan 1 through collaboration with the federal government, further strengthening and accelerating Sarawak’s tourism industry.
Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the ministry is working closely with the federal government to enhance tourism infrastructure and facilities across the State.
“My ministry is also collaborating with MOTAC (the federal Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture) on the funding for projects under the Restoration, Conservation, Renovation and Upgrading Programmes (PPUN).
“MOTAC has allocated RM1.2 million this year for three projects under this programme,” he said during his ministerial winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.
The projects included the flood-adaptive tourism infrastructure upgrading and interpretation facilities enhancement project at Maludam National Park; the PPUN at Miri City Fan; and the bridge and pedestrian walkway repair project at Patrick Libau Homestay.
Abdul Karim also revealed that, as of 2025, there are 74 registered clusters under the Sarawak Homestay Programme implemented by MOTAC, involving 960 homestay operators and a total of 1,991 rooms Statewide.
The programme has generated RM9.2 million in income, including RM2.4 million recorded in the first quarter of this year.
He added that the Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation continues to play an active role as a strategic partner in driving the development of the craft industry, with Kraftangan Malaysia recording sales of RM6.18 million as of April this year.
At the same time, the Sarawak Department of Culture and Arts (JKKN) has contributed significantly to promoting and showcasing Sarawak’s creative industry through various events, including the Sarawak Drum Festival and the Malaysia Theatre Festival at the Sarawak level in 2026.
“In line with Visit Malaysia 2026, Tourism Malaysia continues to strengthen Sarawak’s visibility as a tourism destination through promotional initiatives nationwide, including expanding the Jom Ke Sarawak Programme to Johor to leverage the presence of Singapore travel industry players,” he said.
He added that Tourism Malaysia is also promoting Sarawak in Kuala Lumpur through collaborations with hotels, highlighting the unique cultural charm of Pesta Nukenen in Bario. — DayakDaily
