BINTULU (Oct 28): The implementation of the high-impact water supply project on the Labang-Tubau road, valued at approximately RM130.6 million, is currently underway to improve the water supply system in the area, said Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi.
The Minister of Utility and Telecommunication said the project is scheduled to be completed in the second quarter of 2026.
“The project will boost production capacity and extend clean water coverage to 62 houses and villages in the Labang to Tubau area, Bakun, ensuring a better quality of life for 3,310 residents in the area,” he said.
Julaihi said to ensure better and continuous water supply quality in the Bintulu Division, the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) will ensure that the projects currently in the implementation stage are completed within the stipulated timeframe.
He said this in a statement following a visit to the Sarawak water supply grid programme site on the Bakun road in Tubau today.
The Minister said the project was meticulously planned by the Sarawak government through the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication and JBALB as the implementing agency to meet the increasing water supply demands in these areas.
He said the water supply project is being carried out in two packages.
Package 1 of the Sarawak water supply grid programme – stressed areas, involves water supply in Bakun from Labang to Tubau.
“This project involves the installation of various sizes of pipes over a length of 98km,” he said.
Julaihi said Package 2 involves the construction of a water treatment plant with a capacity of 10 million litres per day, the construction of two high-level water tanks with a capacity of 3.5 million litres, the construction of a three-million litre reservoir, the construction of surface water intake structures, as well as related mechanical and electrical works.
He added these are part of the Sarawak Water Supply Grid System to effectively and comprehensively address water supply issues.
