SIBU (Oct 15): The construction of a new road connecting Kut Muara, Sungai Pinang and Bungan Besar has been approved under the Fourth Rolling Plan of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), costing RM131 million in total.
According to Senator Robert Lau, the implementation agency is currently carrying out preparation works, and the project is expected kick off in the first quarter of 2026.
“The construction is expected to take three years to complete,” he said after attending a briefing by the Matu District Office and Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak held here yesterday, on the Sarawak Region Rural Roads Project to construct a 15km road to link Kut Muara, Sungai Pinang and Bungan Besar, along with a 50m concrete bridge.
Additionally, Lau expressed his gratitude that the federal government’s approval of fund had allowed the project to move forward.
“The Bawang Assan community residing in Sungai Pinang and Bungan Besar have longed for better road connectivity,” he added.
The senator also said two more 30km road sections would be built to connect the route to Rantau Panjang in Sibu.
“One of the sections will be part of Phase 2 of the Rantai Panjang-Rassau Road, funded by the Sarawak government, which covers a distance of 23km.
“Phase 1 of this section has been completed, covering a distance of 6.8km,” said Lau.
Also present at the briefing were councillors Kevin Lau and Christopher Kelebit, as well as community leaders Kapitan Wong Hua and Penghulu William Kanyan.
