KUCHING, Mar 29: The Bidayuh community in Bau is taking deliberate steps to strengthen its roots while pursuing development, with the Bau branch of the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) receiving RM160,000 in support.

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Deputy Minister of Transport (Riverine and Marine) Dato Henry Harry Jinep, who is also the Tasik Biru assemblyman, said the funding reflects a dual aim of advancing community facilities while ensuring the preservation of Bidayuh cultural identity.

“RM150,000 will go towards upgrading the DBNA quarters under the Rural Transformation Project (RTP) 2027, while RM10,000 will support the association’s annual programmes through the Minor Rural Project (MRP) 2026,” he said.

Henry highlighted that the survival of Bidayuh heritage and customs is central to the community’s identity, serving as a foundation even as members adapt to modern life.

“Our heritage is what defines us,” he said, stressing that cultural continuity must go hand-in-hand with progress.

He also encouraged the Bidayuh to invest in education and skills development to remain active participants in Malaysia’s socio-economic growth. The funding initiative complements the Greater Bau Blueprint 2016–2030, which was developed through extensive consultation to ensure development respects the community’s traditions.
