KUCHING, May 20: Sarawak’s industrial landscape is set for a boost with RM183.07 million approved for 17 industrial park projects, including in rural areas, under the 13th Malaysia Plan.
This is expected to support industrial expansion and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) development.
Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan said the State government remains committed to strengthening Sarawak’s industrial ecosystem through the expansion and upgrading of industrial parks and estates statewide.
“Industrial parks are continuously being upgraded to improve infrastructure, utilities, road connectivity, and industrial land capacity to meet growing investor demand,” he said during his ministerial winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting here today.
Touching on the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), he said RM128.05 million had previously been allocated for 23 industrial park projects throughout Sarawak.
Of these, six projects have been completed, namely Sematan Industrial Park Phase 1, Sri Aman Industrial Park, Betong Industrial Park Phase 1, Kapit Industrial Park, Samalaju SME Cluster Phases 1 and 2, and Marudi Industrial Park Phase 1, while the remaining projects are at various stages of implementation.
Meanwhile, the development of Sarikei Industrial Park Phase 2 under the 13MP has also been approved by the State government.
“My ministry is currently identifying a suitable site to maximise its socio-economic impact, particularly in investment generation, job creation, and regional economic growth,” he added.
Awang Tengah said the Sarawak government also recognises Selangau’s development potential, with further assessments to be carried out alongside relevant authorities on the suitability of developing a small and medium industrial park in the area.
He also stressed the importance of developing integrated industrial clusters, where anchor industries can stimulate supporting industries across the supply and value chains, strengthen local participation, and generate broader economic spillover effects.
In addition, he said the ministry would continue working closely with MSMEs through upskilling and reskilling programmes aimed at enhancing participation in industrial clusters and improving competitiveness.
Awang Tengah further noted comprehensive assessment of industrial estates is ongoing to support more efficient and sustainable development. — DayakDaily
