KUCHING (March 13): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced an allocation of RM2.69 million for pondok and tahfiz schools in Sarawak.
He said the funding aims to support religious institutions while ensuring their students remain connected to broader educational developments.
“I have agreed to approve RM2.69 million for pondok and tahfiz schools in Sarawak,” he said during the Sarawak-level Madani 2026 iftar event at Masjid Jamek Negeri Sarawak here.
He emphasised that the government respects the traditional education system practiced in pondok institutions but wants their students to also benefit from mainstream learning.
“We observe the pondok institutions and allow them to continue with their own manhaj tarbiyah, and we do not interfere.
“However, I want these pondok schools not to be left out of the mainstream. They should also learn languages, for example English, and study history so they are not separated from our historical understanding,” he said.
Anwar added that the initiative will also expose students to modern technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), through programmes planned in collaboration with the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC).
“We will also introduce AI in pondok schools. Initial plans have been arranged with MDEC to expose them to this technology,” he said.
Earlier, the Prime Minister highlighted the significance of Ramadan as a period for reflection, discipline, and strengthening unity among Malaysians.
“May this Ramadan become a madrasah for us, a school where we train ourselves, improve ourselves and increase our faith,” he said.
He also stressed the importance of harmony and peaceful coexistence among Malaysia’s diverse communities.
“Hopefully the months after Ramadan will show improvement in our faith, our character, our friendships, our brotherhood and our life in society among races and religions in this beloved country,” he said.
Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof and Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
