SIBU (Jan 17): The RM400 increase in the monthly allowance for community and village leaders (KMKK) in Sarawak effective Jan 1, 2026 should spur them to further enhance the quality of their services in line with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, said Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah.

The State Minister for Women, Children and Community Wellbeing Development said the increase, which benefits 7,700 KMKK, is also an appreciation of their increasingly challenging and complex roles.

Beyond serving as information intermediaries, she said KMKK act as problem-solvers, facilitators and the voice of the people in conveying issues that require government attention.

“You are the backbone of grassroots community administration, constantly dealing directly with the pulse and realities of people’s lives.

“Every complaint, suggestion and grievance reflects the high level of trust placed in your leadership,” she said at a joint address with KMKK from the N.56 Dalat state constituency at the Dalat Welfare Complex.

In light of the allowance increases, Fatimah reminded KMKK to further strengthen their performance, accountability and integrity to ensure government policies and initiatives effectively reach the people.

The Dalat assemblywoman said the Sarawak government, under the leadership of the Premier, continues to prioritise balanced, inclusive and sustainable development.

Various initiatives have been implemented, including infrastructure development, improvements to public facilities, welfare assistance and community empowerment programmes.

“However, the success of these initiatives depends greatly on the active role and strong support of KMKK as implementers and monitors at the grassroots level,” she said, while expressing appreciation for their continued commitment and dedication.

Fatimah also urged KMKK in Dalat to remain proactive and courageous in voicing local issues in a factual and prudent manner, while ensuring that information shared with the public is accurate and responsible.

She stressed the need to avoid misunderstandings and confusion, particularly in today’s fast-paced social media environment.

“Dalat is rich in cultural diversity, customs and social backgrounds. Harmony and unity must therefore always be preserved and strengthened.

“KMKK play an important role as agents of unity, mediators in resolving local issues, and role models in practising mutual respect and tolerance,” she said.

She further reminded the KMKK to uphold the trust placed in them with integrity, sincerity and a strong sense of responsibility, free from favouritism, personal interests or external influence that could undermine public trust.

The trust given by the community, she said, is a heavy responsibility that must be safeguarded.

Fatimah also encouraged KMKK to continuously enhance their capabilities through knowledge, leadership skills and the use of digital technology.

“The ability to adapt to change will make KMKK more effective, particularly in managing community data, disseminating information and dealing with government agencies,” she added.
