KUCHING (Feb 18): The upgrading of the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) Centre’s tennis courts at Jalan Crockshank here will be carried out this year to ensure the facility meets regional standards ahead of next year’s Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
SLTA president Dato Patrick Liew said the upgrading works are estimated to cost RM5 million and are expected to take about eight months to complete.
He said the project could begin as early as May.
“Once completed, it will feature elevated spectator seating as well as improved court facilities,” he told reporters at his Chinese New Year open house on Tuesday.
He added that the upgrading is necessary to ensure the existing facilities comply with Southeast Asian sporting standards in preparation for the SEA Games scheduled for next year.
The SLTA Centre is set to host the tennis events for the 2027 SEA Games, which Kuching will co-host.
Meanwhile, Liew’s open house was attended by friends, relatives and associates, who were treated to an array of Japanese-style dishes.
Among those present were State Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development Datuk Len Talif Salleh; Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala; State Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu; and Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation Berhad (SDEC) chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Morshidi Abdul Ghani.
